Mike,
I have used headsets/boom mic variations virtually since going mobile and that was a lot of years ago.
I also spent a lots of hours on the road, suburban and highway.
Advantages
- better audio, mic close to mouth less background noise.
- you require less volume for a received signal, can hear what is going on about you.
- your are not restricted with head movements when observing what is going on around you.
- able to use both hands to control the vehicle and operate other controls.
- Removes the risk of sitting on the mic causing timeouts during WICEN Events etc. (guilty of that one pre-headset days, I lie it was the dog sitting on the mic)
Disadvantage !!
While driving home late at night happily talking and hitting a water filled spoon drain at speed (The old Majura Lane Road) and letting
out a host of expletives while getting everything back under control much to the consternation of the station I was talking too.
SK Col Harvey VK1AU.
Amanda
PS: elcheapo telephone heads sets with modified connectors works as well as brand name amateur headsets.
